Harrison Hyung Min Kim

Harrison Kim is an award-winning educator, researcher, and designer in engineering systems design, analytics, systems engineering, and energy and environmental sustainability. He is a Professor in the Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and the Academic Co-Director of the Hoeft Techonology and Management (T&M) program. He also holds appointments with the Beckman Institute, Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and the Computational Science and Engineering Program at the University of Illinois.


Prof. Kim’s research ($15M to date) focuses on a variety of areas of complex systems - energy systems engineering; AI-based sustainable product design; environmental life cycle analysis and costing; renewable energy and vehicle electrification; multidisciplinary, multilevel optimization; green product portfolio design. Application areas are automotive, consumer electronics, heavy-duty equipment, national security, commercial/military system of systems, and information technology. Research sponsors and collaborators include the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Department of Energy (DOE), DOE REMADE Institute, Sandia National Labs (SNL), Caterpillar Inc., Deere and Co., National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), Brunswick, and Hyundai Motor Company.


Dr. Kim has received numerous recognitions including the National Science Foundation's CAREER Award, Dean’s Award in Excellence in Research (formerly Xerox Award; Associate Professors with highest research accomplishments for the last five years), Best Paper Award in ASME Design for Manufacturing and Life Cycle Conference, Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in national design competitions (Lincoln Arc Welding Award as a faculty advisor), and news media coverage in the USA Today and the Chicago Tribune.


Harrison Kim earned his Ph.D. degree at the University of Michigan in 2001 in the area of Engineering System Design and Optimization in Mechanical Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Panos Papalambros. He joined the University of Illinois in 2005 after postdoctoral training under Prof. Wei Chen (NAE Member) at Northwestern University and has been leading the Enterprise Systems Optimization Lab. Prior to joining Illinois, he held positions in research and consulting -- the US Army Automotive Research Center, Northwestern University, and a Business-IT consulting company.

Yilan Jiang earned her double bachelor's degrees in Applied Mathematics and Economics from University of California, San Diego, and her master's degree in data science from Columbia University. She is currently working on the topics about data mining and its applications to sustainable design. 

Kangcheng Lin

Kangcheng earned his double B.S. degrees in Applied Mathematics and Statistics at University of California, Los Angeles, and his M.S. degree in Statistical Science at Duke University. He joined the ISE department as a Ph.D student in 2019, where he is currently working on the topics of product design system analytics and machine learning. 

Seyoung Park

Seyoung Park earned her B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering at POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology), and her M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is currently working on the topic of data-driven product design as a Ph.D. student.  

Michael Saidani

Michael Saidani joined Prof. Kim's group as a postdoc in 2019 after completing his Ph.D. in Centrale Supélec, France 2018. He is currently working on the topic of sustainable product design and circular economy.

Jungmok Ma, a Ph.D. student in ISE, received his B.S. degree in Statistical Information Analysis from the Korea Military Academy and M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from the Penn State in 2002 and 2008. From 2009 to 2010, he worked as an instructor at the OR department in the Korea Army Academy. His current research is on data driven engineering design and machine learning.

Ning Quan

Ning Quan earned a B.Eng. degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the National University of Singapore and joined the ISE department as a Ph.D. student in 2012. As an undergraduate, Ning Quan did research on the use of Kriging metamodels in simulation optimization. He is currently working on the topic of modularity in product design.
